Project Description and Research Questions In Alaska, Moving North contrasted movement structures based on work developed by Barbara Dilley and Nancy Stark Smith with studies derived from contact improvisation and other contemporary improvisational dance practices. We used Dilley and Smith's minimalist, straight line-based structures to engage with the Cartesian mapping system, while contact improvisation provided a pathway into a sensation-based approach to orientation. We worked indoors, in conventional dance spaces, outdoors at sites representing the urban/nature interface, and in undeveloped natural areas. Starting with the broad questions, “what is north about this place?” and, “what would dancing in this place reveal about moving north?”, we developed the following core research questions: •
When, how, and where have I experienced moving north, or moving in the
north?
• How does this environment affect my movement choices?
• What dance structures or movement choices can I use to create
a heightened experience of place?
•
What internal and external information do I read to tell me where I
am?
